Drafting some OKRs in your team is a huge first step – and sometimes it’s enough on its own. But refining & aligning OKRs across multiple teams within multiple layers of your organisation is a force-multiplier like no other. This is where organisation-wide focus and transparency come into play.
“Having goals improves performance. Spending hours cascading goals up and down the company, however, does not. …We have a market-based approach, where over time our goals all converge, because the top OKRs are known and everyone else’s OKRs are visible.”
– Bock, Laszlo. Work Rules!: Insights from Inside Google That Will Transform How You Live and Lead (p. 156). John Murray Press. Kindle Edition.
A “market based” approach to OKR combines flexibility, transparency, and personal initiative to align, negotiate, and improve the quality of OKRs both vertically through layers of your organisation and horizontally across multiple teams in a given area.
This is a simple, concrete workshop technique I use to help teams negotiate and improve the quality of their OKRs. I’ll explain how it works in the video. For more, read this blog post.
