After drafting some okrs but before aligning them it’s important to look outside the team to begin aligning all the related OKRs across multiple teams, identifying dependencies and negotiating precise outcomes along the way.
You may have used an online or physical whiteboard or other tools to help brainstorm and solidify your OKRs but now it’s time to put them into a format that is simple, flexible and legible as you continue to investigate, advocate, and negotiate with each other.
The more that teams are continuously scrolling through and glancing at each other’s draft OKRs, the easier engagement, discussion, and alignment will become. A template like this allows you to put all related OKRs in a single scrollable view that doesn’t require any clicking or navigation. Use the “comments” feature to select bits of text and tag & notify colleagues about questions or challenges. Propose changes or make them directly in this doc so that everyone can easily see the latest updates.
Need a longer, deeper, realtime, discussion? Don’t be shy about approaching a team member to talk. Remember, the conversations we have about OKRs are the most valuable and actionable part of the framework!
You could even consider holding an OKR Festival or a gallery walk to openly discuss OKRs in real time.
Why is this template so boring? 😉 This template is deliberately simple and ordinary to make it easier to move information from one category to another (e.g. turning a health metric into a key result or a key result into an activity) and to ensure the focus stays on the language not distracting formatting or visuals.
